Episode 17 – Council of Thieves Vol 4 and 5 with Clinton Boomer and Greg Vaughan

Chronicles returns with a Monster of a Double Episode. Big Bertha covers two volumes of the Council of Thieves Adventure Path and more.  We start off with an extended intro and discuss Heroes and Monsters, a new community survey concerning Pathfinder Society and what to buy for Pathfinder RPG. Gary Ray returns for a discussion about RPG retailing in Diamond in the Rough. Colen McAlister of Lone Wolf Development joins us to discuss the latest updates to Herolab. On the CCW, Research brings us the Tiefling Mage Hunter. Erik Mona returns to the cast in his smoking jacket to discuss the latest developments at Paizo Publishing. We welcome our first of two AP authors, Clinton J. Boomer to the podcast to discuss his work on Vol.4 of the Council of Thieves AP, The Infernal Syndrome. We follow it up with Greg Vaughan to discuss his work on Vol. 5 of the same AP, The Mother of Flies. After the break, Boomer joins us again for the spoilerific details. We welcome a guest designer to the Encounter Lab, as Paizo freelancer Jesse Benner joins us in the studio to discuss a variant on our Pathfinderized War Troll. Mr. Vaughan joins us again to provide us with insider Google Maps tips to touring the darker side of Tulsa, Okla.. And of course, interspersed on the back nine, Ryan and Steel pull double duty with their reviews of The Infernal Syndrome and The Mother of Flies. We send you on your way home with our final thoughts on the sheer stupidity of attempting to record, edit and release a podcast of nearly 8 hours in duration. Psst – we plan do it again next time on Episode 18, too!

Thanks guys. LOVE LOVE LOVE the podcast. Been listening to you guys for 5-6 weeks now and I’m all caught up. I am currently GM’ing a Kingmaker campaign, and it’s my first time GM’ing, sod your input is very helpful. No scratch that, your input and experience is priceless. (p.s. I know you said it isn’t for first time GMs, but I picked the campaign before I heard your podcast. I’m very good at thinking on my toes, so we are doing pretty well, and I am starting to turn into something of a rules monster with obsessive study.)

I have been watching the last few episodes of your Kingmaker campaign, and I enjoy that thoroughly. Is there a way to get some of the earlier episodes? Are they archived somewhere or something? I would really like to see some of your early kingmaker play as something of a reference point for me and my campaign, and also for sheer entertainment value.

Steel, you have mentioned that once you get to high level that the game starts breaking. I am wondering if you guys could maybe comment on tips for newer GM’s for higher level play. I feel like I am doing very well now (levels 1-4 etc) but what do I need to know about super high levels, like magic ways to break the game (scrying, etc)? And how is it that you guys react to things like that at a high level? I have about a year (or more) before I get to that point, so I’m not too worried, but I’d like to start preparing myself so I don’t have a ridiculously broken game 3/4 way through the campaign, and make sure that I know how to react to things happening.

I’m a huge fan, keep up the good work and thanks.

I like this show when they are talking about the game. It is when they talk about their personnel life that I think these guys are jerks; and what is this with the name of this chick “cherry pie”? Really? What did this guy marry a 12 year old? Barring that one fine show.

Az, Haha. Seriously plassteel, watch the “Cherry Pie” music video by Warrant. It’ll give you a new appreciation for the name. :)

Also, looking at the D20 Chronicle forums people are getting on you guys about the size and infrequent releases, etc. Here’s my feeling:

You guys do what you do, however the hell you want to do it. You put on the best rpg podcast that I have heard, and the insight and entertainment value are worth waiting for. Although, 8 hrs is close to ten… why don’t you all round that up and go for the Guinness? (world record, not the other thing ;) )

Keep it up. And quit skipping out on Kingmaker JTV sessions, would ya? Tell your peeps to get their shizz together and show up. You need a stand-in king, you let me know…

    Thanks again.

    Thanks Brayden.

Yeah, we’ve gad a few disruptions to Kingmaker lately, the latest being the passing of the father of one of our players (Charlie is also the GM in our Legacy of Fire campaign). So as you can well imagine, that threw an unexpected wrench in the works this past week. In comparison to the enormity of the impact on other matters, disruption of a game schedule due to a death is small potatoes, of course.

On the plus side, I have all of our new Age of Worms campaign recorded and we’ll post those soon. We are working on a montage intro and will do some editing to deal with an unpleasant sound error caused by one of our player’s hardware; but we will get them all up for regular download in the next few weeks. We’ll get the weekly campaign up on iTunes as well — though it will be in iPad mp4 format I think as opposed to iPhone size. All will be viewable in a VLC player for viewing on your computer as well. For those who do not want to watch, you can always simply listen to it as an “actual play” podcast if the video is not important to you. We will be adding a number of new video elements to things as that campaign moves forward, including a way to show the active “Skype talker” on screen in a pic-in-pic frame as well. Production wise, consider them all as “works in progress”.

We don’t intend to permanently archive our Kingmaker sessions, but we will be recording and archiving all the new campaigns we start – so Skull and Shackles so you can subscrive to it via iTunes or RSS and the same for Rise of the Runelords Anniv Edition, when we start that later this summer as well.

    @Azmyth

Az. First things first. Give my best to Charlie. That has to be hard as hell.

Secondly, Sounds amazing. Can’t wait. The Age of Worms stuff is great, I’ve caught a couple session on the Jtv feed. The unfortunate noises were, unfortunate. Haha. But that comes with the territory of an online session sometimes. The pic in pic stuff for the video sounds awesome.

What camera(s) do you guys run (both you and steel)? The setup is great. We are flirting around with the idea of doing a setup somewhat like yours for makeup sessions, reschedules, etc and my $40 LifeCam just isn’t bringing it (imagine that). Also you both seem to have them mounted on a boom arm or something. Is that homemade, or special ordered?

Well, i would have another dozen questions or so about how you guys stage your sessions, but I’ll let just trouble you with those. Also, is the pay-for-play version of skype worth it (and do ALL members have to do the 4.99/month)? We have been messing with the Google + and it seems to work okay, but I’m always looking for better as long as the money is being well spent.

P.s. Mostly kidding about the Kingmaker disruptions, if you you can’t tell from the joking tone that may or may not have translated to text. I’m sure that you are all more eager than me to get that flowing again. It breaks my heart as GM every time we have to cancel a session.

Hey guys, haven’t heard anything from your Jtv/Twitch page since Kublacon. Hopefully everything is going well for you. Wondering if you have moved stuff to a different location, or if you are just taking a little break.

Keep me posted, that way I’m not missing out on any action. Thanks,
